HNC Social Care at Motherwell College

If you have recent experience in the care sector, enjoy working as part of a team and would like to gain a nationally recognised qualification this is the course for you. You will attend both college and placement where you gain knowledge and have the opportunity to apply your new skills. You study psychology, sociology, social policy and social care practice as well as options relevant to your placement or workplace. To obtain the HNC Social Care, you must attend classes and workplace practical experience sessions. Assessments are carried out in various ways, including essay, open book assignments and case study. The workplace element is assessed in the workplace by college work based assessors and if successful you will obtain 3 SVQ Health and Social Care units at Level 3. The focus of this award is in the ability to relate theory to practice.
Entry requirements
Ideally you will have 2 Highers as well as Standard Grades or a group of relevant SQA units.
GSVQ III in Health or Social Care
SGA in Health or Social Care at Higher Level
SVQ Level 3 Care
Recent experience within a care setting is essential.
You will receive an interview as part of the application process. You will submit a piece of written work and will be subject to a Disclosure Scotland check.
Future Options
This course can lead to employment in residential or domiciliary social care settings. On successful completion you can apply for entry to BA Social Work or Social Science at University. HND in Social Science is another educational route that can be considered.

Part-time day or evening students must be employed in a care setting.
Course duration
1 year full-time or 1 year part-time evening (attending 2 evenings per week) or 1 year day release.
